Water Resistance in Watches Explained

Water Resistance in Watches Explained

Water resistance ratings can sometimes be confusing. A watch marked as water resistant is not automatically suitable for swimming.

A 30-metre rating generally protects against accidental splashes and light rain. It is not recommended for swimming.

A 50-metre rating may be suitable for regular daily use and limited water exposure. However, prolonged swimming should still be avoided unless the manufacturer confirms it.

A 100-metre rating is usually more suitable for swimming and recreational water activities.

A 200-metre rating is often designed for more demanding water use and certain diving activities.

Water resistance can reduce over time because of worn seals and regular use. Avoid pressing buttons or adjusting the crown underwater.

Always check the manufacturer’s instructions before exposing your watch to water. Proper care will help protect the internal movement.
